President’s Message 2020 President, James M. Hallett

Jim Hallett

Thank you for your membership in LACFLA.  Together we fill the space between local practice groups and the statewide collaborative group, CPCal (above which stands the premier collaborative group, the International Association of Collaborative Professionals, IACP).  With LACFLA we bring together Los Angeles County and nearby collaborative groups to form a valuable network of collaborative professionals united in the cause of helping families in our huge, sprawling neighborhood.

Collaboration by its nature requires that we all be in this together.  LACFLA serves that requirement wonderfully, uniting collaborative professionals from the Inland Empire to Ventura County, from the San Gabriel Mountains to Orange County.   If I, in Manhattan Beach, need to find a financial advisor in Woodland Hills, this is where I look.  (And thanks to LACFLA, I already know and trust them.)

We continue the work we’ve done for decades.  Every August we provide a widely recognized 3-day basic training.  We supplement this banner program with insightful advanced trainings throughout the year, covering topics you’ll rarely find anywhere else in our area.  We get together sometimes just to get together, so our clients don’t have to pay for one minute of our getting to know and trust each other.  We work closely with the courts to be sure the courts incorporate what we offer into what they offer.  (Indeed, we have just completed the internationally recognized collaborative rules of court now adopted by the Los Angeles County Superior Court.)  We work in law schools, with a collaborative clinic at Loyola Law School that is admired and emulated across the nation.  We are regularly updating our model Collaborative Case Stipulation, which can be found on our website along with countless resources for our members.  We initiate and support marketing efforts at every level of our practice, including our professional listings, limited to our members, found on our website and searchable by the public looking for assistance.  Our newest project:  Creating an online, open practice group to supplement the many practice groups now operating under the LACFLA umbrella.

And all that is a mere introduction to all that we do, thanks to your support and thanks to your commitment to Consensual Dispute Resolution (CDR) and collaborative practice.  If you haven’t done so already, please take advantage of the opportunities we provide to meet more of your fellow practitioners.  We come from a place not of greed and aggression, but instead from a place of love and compassion, so it’s easy to get to know us and it’s one of those professional experiences that reminds you of why you got into your business in the first place.  We never waver from professionalism and client-centered representation, but we do it in way that restructures families instead of tearing them apart.  That’s what we’re about and what you’re about. Thank you for being a part of the collaborative community.

Jami Fosgate, Esquire

Jami Fosgate is a family law attorney who founded The Fosgate Family Law and Mediation Center which provides numerous services designed to help clients save time, money and frustration which often arises during contested divorce cases, including Collaborative Divorce Representation, Divorce and Family Mediation and Flat Fee Legal Document Preparation.

This year Jami was awarded the Eureka Award from CPCal which recognizes and honors those who have made significant contributions and demonstrated an abiding dedication to establishing and sustaining Collaborative Practice in California.”

“I am honored and humbled to receive this award and I thank all my colleagues who nominated me. Being a Eureka Award winner inspires me to continue offering my no court services and to encourage couples to divorce differently. Since 2006 I have devoted my practice exclusively to Family Law and, beginning in 2010, I stopped accepting clients for court litigation cases. Instead, I offer services to people who want to cooperate to resolve their disputes using cooperative methods, including collaborative team, mediation, document preparation and consulting services. I serve regularly as a volunteer mediator, daily settlement officer and temporary judge for Los Angeles Superior Court and I also volunteer my time as collaborative attorney for pro bono cases at the Loyola Law School Collaborative Clinic. In my private practice, I have assisted over 200 couples with their family and divorce disputes and I hope to be able to help hundreds more!”

Congratulations, Jami!
