This Summer LACFLA sponsored our Second Annual Diversity Workshop.  Those who attended participated in self-awareness exercises and were rewarded with a superb panel of experts who not only distributed pertinent and significant materials, but revealed personal stories to enhance their presentations.  We extend a very heartwarming thank you of appreciation to Dr. Gitu Bhatia, Dr. Alfredo E. Crespo, Dr. Albert Gibbs and Diana M. Goodman, together with LACFLA's Diversity Chairperson and Coordinator, Ellyn Stein.  LACFLA is committed to continuing our zealousness for awareness of diversity in the Southern California communities in the coming years.

LACFLA stands ready, willing and able to join the bandwagon for passage of the Uniform Collaborative Law Act in California.  We have participate in preliminary discussions with legislators in Sacramento, with the hopes of obtaining sponsorship in the near future.  For our membership who are interested in reading more about UCLA, check out my articles that have appeared in Family Law News - Official Publication of the State Bar of California, "The Uniform Collaborative Law Act - What's Next?"(Click here to read these articles by Frederick J. Glassman, Esq.).    The IACP will soon publish a special edition in their Collaborative Review, focusing on UCLA.  Our members are invited to join the UCLA Task Force to spread the word for passage.

Your Board of Directors is hard at work in revising the Collaborative Stipulation and Order, as well as other documents, including checklists for screening for domestic violence, and for client appropriateness, all in anticipation of compliance with requirements of the UCLA.  Stay tuned!

Our traditional faculty-concept for LACFLA's interdisciplinary Basic Training is back by popular demand!  Once again, our annual training will be held in October and the faculty includes 26 LACFLA members from all three allied professionals: namely, attorneys, mental health and financial.  We have expanded the training to include a third day so all attendees will have an opportunity to practice their newly devopled collaborative skills, witness role playing by a panel of experts, and network with all LACFLA members who desire enhancement of their collaborative skills.

We are appreciative of your continued support for our programs.  We are a volunteer organization and need your help.  Please keep coming back to the website for more information and let us know your willingness to join one of our committees.

Have a wonderful rest of the Summer and we will talk to you again in the Fall!

    LACFLA President,
    Frederick J. Glassman, Esq.

Marital dissolutions often are not merely legal or economic disputes.  Because they arise out of the most intimate relationships, they

implicate the basic personal, emotional and familial needs of

parties and their children.  Our court system increasingly has

recognized that a judicial decree is far from the final word in a

divorce; parental and fiscal responsibilities may last for many years.

The collaborative approach, which includes attorneys for each party,

as well as mental health professionals and neutral financial experts

to support the family and guide the parties to mutually acceptable resolutions, can provide parties with complementary resources and dispute resolution methods that are simply unavailable in court.

--Ronald M. George, Chief Justice of California

    Supreme Court of California
